I would like to conclude my 3-part series on overcoming biases by talking about the outcome of Walking In Newness. During this series I've encouraged you to:

  • Admit You Have Them (Biases)
  • Leave Your Biases at the Cross
  • Walk in Newness (Today)

During this series, I provided steps we can all take to help us admit we all have this problem, and I've also shared ways we can leave our biases at the Cross. Today, I would like to conclude this series by empowering you with 3-steps that will help you maintain your New Walk:

  1. Imagine Walking in Someone Else Shoes
  2. Seekout Cross-cultural Relationships
  3. Practice Makes Maturity

Imagine Walking in Someone Else Shoes (Be Compassionate)

Rather than judge a person, take time to think about their situation and imagine yourself experiencing the same. Remember, everyone has a story to tell; your willingness to listen, learn, and imagine their story being yours can help you slay the biases running rampade in your life.

Seekout Cross-cultural Relationships (Be Intentional)

One thing I am proud of, and believe I've done well with over the course of my tenure in pastoral ministry and as a mental health professional, is intentionally building relationship with not just my culture, but with people that don't look like, talk like, and/or act like me. Remember, each cross-cutural relationship you build will be bewarding and transformational.

Practice Makes Maturity (Be Wise)

We've all heartd the saying, "Practice makes perfect." I'm going to do a play on words by saying, "Practice makes maturity." There are many scriptures throughout the Bible that talks about being perfect. In many of those passages, the word perfect means mature, which is why I'm encouraging you to be mature. Maturity develops wisdom.

You can overcome your biases by remembering and practicing my 3 B's:

  • Be Compassionate
  • Be Intentional
  • Be Wise

Walking in Newness will be your outcome.

Psalms 139:23-24 says, "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me." What a powerful prayer you can pray daily.
