I was led by God to focus today's Discipleship Devotional on the job market and debt. You may not have noticed, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a good job. With the rise of AI, the difficulty college graduates are facing in the job market, and the increase in unemployment within the African American community, it's becoming more and more difficult for hardworking people to find credible employment. My parents' words ring true: "When America catches a cold, people of color catch the flu, which often results in more debt, and more debt leads to fewer opportunities.

If this is where you are, please know that when doors are nailed shut, God can open windows of opportunity. I encourage you to prepare for the blessings God has in store for you, because your inability to see God at work does not mean He isn't working behind the scenes on your behalf. Prepare by doing the following:

  • Rebuilding your credit.
  • Get rid of wasteful expenses.
  • Pray for and seek out financial resources and support.
  • Humbly accepting help/support from those who offer it.
  • Face reality by establishing a real budget and sticking to it.
  • Establish and, over time, maintain an emergency fund.
  • Trusting God to open windows when doors of opportunity are nailed shut.

All of the above takes time, but it is not impossible.

When you know the problem and can see it clearly, you must do something about it. Remember, to change circumstances, you must change your thinking, take action, and stay committed.
